4 Tips To Get Out Of A Creative Rut

I’ve spent some time this afternoon writing these tips I’ve been wanting to share for a while. I know how shitty it is to be in a rut, I was in one not long ago, and to be honest, I’m still practicing these tips every day to drag myself out of it. So just putting these out here to let you know that you are not alone. Hope these are helpful x

1. ACCEPT THE RUT

As annoyingly preachy as it sounds, accepting is your first step. Sometimes, feeling stuck is just another part of the creative process. What seems like a “creative rut” on the surface might just be another stop on your creative journey. Be patient, learn from it, and trust that you’ll come out the other side.

2. REMEMBER WHY YOU DO WHAT YOU DO

What’s your purpose behind the things you do? Find it and make sure you remember it. Your purpose is the force that will drive you in the right direction. By taking the pressure off yourself and focusing clearly on your values and your passions, you can get back to the basics and generate new ideas to inform how to break out of a rut.

3. DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF WITH OTHERS

Comparing is a distraction. It is one of the most toxic things to your creative energy. We all know it yet we all do it. Remember everyone is on their own path, serving their own purpose. Nobody’s destined to fulfill your purpose and you’re the only one who can do it. So what’s the point to compare? It takes time & practice to not to compare. You can start with reducing your social media scrolling time. Instead, read a good book, listen to a podcast and spend some time to educate & train your thoughts.

4. ACT FIRST, THINK LATER

Have you heard of the Mark Manson ‘Do Something’ Principle’? He said ‘Action isn’t just the effect of motivation, but also the cause of it.’ The motivation chain is actually an endless loop. It works like inspiration-motivation-action-inspiration-motivation-etc. So it doesn’t matter where you start, you don’t necessarily need motivation in order to create. Just do something, anything, in your creative environment, and the inspiration & motivation will come.
